Five photography exhibitions not to be missed in 2022
One of the best ways to cultivate our creativity is certainly to be inspired. Reading and travelling, looking up and filling your eyes with beauty ! We need artistic language, messages conveyed through photography, painting, sculpture and any other modern expression, we need to stimulate our senses. 2022 finally sees a rich art offering, in fact there are many exhibitions that our country hosts and which are certainly worth a visit. Ferdinando Scianna at Palazzo Reale Milan Ferdinando Scianna is one of the masters of photography, not only in Italy. He began to develop a passion for this language in the 1960s, describing through images the culture and traditions of his region of origin, Sicily. With over 200 black and white photographs printed in different formats, the exhibition spans the entire career of the great Sicilian photographer and develops along a complex narrative path, from Sicily to the Bolivian Andes, from religious festivals to his experience in the world of fashion ( started with Dolce & Gabbana). Then the reportages, the landscapes, his obsession with mirrors. Finally, the portraits of his great friends, masters of the world of art and culture such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Jorge Louis Borges and in particular Leonardo Sciascia, to whom, among other things, an entire and unpublished section of the exhibition is reserved. Until June 5th. You can lie with photographs. You can even tell the truth, although this is extremely difficult. Vivian Maier at the Royal Museums of Turin An unpublished Vivian Maier is the one who arrives in Turin with the exhibition dedicated to her and which comes directly from the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris. An exhibition that aims to tell unknown or little-known aspects of the mysterious human and artistic story of Vivian Maier, known on the international scene since 2007, when her photographic corpus was discovered a few years after her death in 2009. Her story has always fascinated me, she wasn't officially a photographer but rather a nanny but she always had her camera with her with which she was able to capture fragments of a chaotic reality, full of life and spontaneity, a unique street photography in its style. His rolls of film were discovered by director John Maloof, who accidentally bought them at an auction house. Maloof was looking for photographs of the city of Chicago for a photography volume when he accidentally discovered a briefcase containing Maier's negatives. He remained so involved in the photographer's work that he chronicled her life in a documentary film entitled Finding Vivian Maier. The exhibition in the Chiablese Rooms of the Royal Museums develops around the recurring themes in the American photographer's production, mainly the street and the life that animated working-class neighborhoods in Europe and the United States, documenting the social changes of her time. Looks, gestures, expressions, colors and childhood are intertwined in the exhibition itinerary, as well as the unpublished repertoire of shots taken by the artist in Turin in 1959. Robert Capa at Villa Bassi Abano Terme Robert Capa is considered one of the most famous war photographers. He documented many conflicts, including the Spanish Civil War and World War II. It spoke of the suffering, misery and chaos that only a tragedy like war can bring and which unfortunately we still have to witness today. However, a few kilometers from Padua, in the spa city, an unusual Robert Capa is on stage. An exhibition that brings together the photojournalist's lesser-known reportages and reveals his gaze on the world when he was not focused on the war front which he reported like few others in the world. Until June 5, 2022 "As a war photographer I hope to remain unemployed for the rest of my life." (Robert Capa) 4. Henri Cartier-Bresson at Mudec in Milan A beautiful exhibition dedicated to the work of the great master of photojournalism in China which brings together an exceptional corpus of photographs and archive documents: over 100 original prints together with period magazine publications, documents and letters from the collection of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation . A unique journey, through the lens of his camera, which recounts two key moments in the history of China: the fall of the Kuomintang and the establishment of the communist regime (1948-1949) and Mao Zedong's "Great Leap Forward" (1958). Until July 3rd. “For me, the camera is a sketchbook, the instrument of intuition and spontaneity, the holder of the moment which, in visual terms, questions and decides at the same time.” Henri Cartier-Bresson 5. Frida Kahlo seen through the shots of Nickolas Murray Sixty shots of Nickolas Muray in the most secret moments of the life of Frida Kahlo, pop symbol of feminism and Mexico, to make the entire public discover the woman behind the artist and learn her secrets. A photographic exhibition that for the first time in Europe reveals to the public the complete collection of shots of Frida by Nickolas Muray, her long-time friend and lover. Above all, “Frida Kahlo on White Bench” is the most iconic photo. The immersive exhibition is scheduled at the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi in Turin until 5 June 2022.
