Description
Discover the artist who put soup cans at MoMA and movie stars at the Met. This introduction to Andy Warhol presents his prolific and radical oeuvre and his relentless reflection on consumerism, materialism, and the role of the artist. The collection includes over 100 images of Warhol's work in high-quality reproductions that retain all the brilliance of the originals.
Andy Warhol (1928–1987) is considered the most important exponent of Pop Art. A critical and creative observer of American society, he explored fundamental themes such as consumerism, materialism, media and celebrity culture.
Drawing inspiration from contemporary advertisements, comic books, consumer products, and Hollywood's most famous faces, Warhol proposed a radical reevaluation of what could be considered artistic subject matter. With Warhol, a Campbell's Soup can or a Coca-Cola bottle became as worthy of artistic status as any traditional still life. At the same time, he redefined the role of the artist. His famous statement, "I want to be a machine," is well known. He systematically reduced the presence of his own hand, working with mass-production methods, repeated images, and dozens of assistants in his studio, which he christened The Factory .
This volume introduces Warhol's multifaceted and prolific production, which revolutionized the distinction between “high” and “low” art and integrated ideas of life, production, and consumption that remain central questions of contemporary experience today.
