Description
Pay homage to the greatest fashion talents of the last century, from Azzedine Alaïa and Coco Chanel to Alexander McQueen and Yves Saint Laurent. This updated edition features photographs of hundreds of dresses selected from the permanent collection of the museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York .
From Azzedine Alaïa, Cristóbal Balenciaga, and Coco Chanel to Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, and Vivienne Westwood, more than a century of fashion’s greatest names are celebrated in this new edition of Fashion Designers A–Z.
This accessible and updated volume presents photographs of hundreds of garments selected from the permanent collection of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) museum. Elegant turn-of-the-century evening gowns, Mondrian-style minimalist chic, and everything in between. Each of these works of art is chosen not only for its beauty, but also to exemplify the unique philosophy, skill, and aesthetic of each of the featured designers.
In her introductory essay, the museum's director and chief curator, Valerie Steele, writes about the rise of the fashion museum and the emergence of the fashion exhibition as a popular and controversial phenomenon. The foreword is by international style expert Suzy Menkes, texts by the museum's curators help shed historical light on each label and garment depicted, and the beautifully drawn portraits by artist Robert Nippoldt pay homage to the creators behind them.

As an author, curator, and curator, Steele has played a pivotal role in creating the modern field of fashion studies.
