Description
Discover the lyrical seven-decade career of Catalan-born Joan Miró , a leading figure in 20th-century art. His highly individual style combines surrealist, Dadaist, and abstract elements with dazzling colors and unique symbolic narratives. From automatic drawings to gas sculptures, this legend of Modernism abandoned categorization and standardization in favor of his dreamlike worlds.
With a career spanning seven decades, Catalan Joan Miró (1893–1983) was a multifaceted giant of modern art, creating masterpieces in painting, sculpture, artist's books, tapestries, and ceramics, and embracing ideologies and languages ranging from Fauvism to Surrealism, from Dadaism to Magic Realism, from Cubism to abstraction.
Throughout his inexhaustible output, Miró constantly evolved, seeking to eschew classification and reject the approval of "bourgeois" critics while pursuing his own personal dream worlds. Having emerged on the public scene in the early 1920s, he initially experimented with Fauvism and Cubism, later developing a distinctive style of symbols and pictograms arranged in enigmatic visual narratives, often inspired by Catalan life. As his career progressed, he gravitated toward Surrealism, and while never fully identifying with the movement, he became one of its most celebrated exponents thanks to techniques such as automatic drawing, Lyrical Abstraction, and Color Field painting. In later years, he further expanded his media, working with ceramics, textiles, and even gas sculptures.
Through vivid colors, dreamlike fantasies, and enigmatic symbols, this volume brings together the many facets of Miró's kaleidoscopic oeuvre to introduce his fascinating career, his dialogue with the major modernist movements, and how he became a legend of 20th-century art.
