Malevich

After an initial interest in realism, impressionism and symbolism, the Ukrainian Kazimir Malevich (1878–1935) found his way in the dissolution of figurative subjects and landscapes into a purely emotional abstraction . In 1915, the artist produced what is widely celebrated as the first and definitive abstract work : Black Square , in which the eponymous square stands out against a white background, acclaimed as the “zero point of painting” and milestone of modern and abstract art.

This book reviews Malevich's major ideas and innovations and places his pioneering work in the context of of the Russian and international avant-garde . Thanks to the splendid reproductions of his works, we will analyze the theory of suprematism developed by the artist, based on a rigorous geometric abstraction and on the “supremacy of pure emotion in the creative process” as well as its leading role in the development of the constructivism and his interest in philosophy, literature, Russian folk art, and the fourth dimension.
