Native Americans had preserved stories for centuries. As they continued to be displaced by settlers throughout the 19th century, this practice became more difficult but also essential. Hides and fabrics were traditionally used as canvases, but were soon replaced by paper.
One of the most popular ways to preserve their stories became the ledger books used by the same settlers who were displacing them. Native artisans drew in these books with pencils, paints, and sometimes crayons, documenting their stories and more. What was once used to inventory settlers' property was repurposed to inventory the cultural practices of indigenous peoples.
