Klee

Author of rigorous theories and several thousand paintings, drawings and watercolors, Paul Klee (1879–1940) is considered one of the among the most cerebral and prolific exponents of twentieth-century European art . Although usually small in size, his works are remarkable for their conceptual refinement and meticulous nuances of line, color, and tone.

Klee's stylistic development was influenced by his early membership in the German Expressionist group The Blue Rider and, above all, a trip to Tunisia in 1914 that radically changed his use of color. After the war, Klee taught at the prestigious Bauhaus school, where his lessons (as well as the progressive affirmation of his artistic production) emphasized the symbolic potential of nuance, line and geometry .

Klee was also inspired by cubism, poetry, music, literature, language and the simplistic strength of the childlike drawing . Famous for his stylized figures, Klee often combined a seemingly childlike candor with compositional rigor and intellectual prowess.
