By the late 1800s, color chromolithographic printing was widely used in Europe, and France was at the forefront of using this technique to create commercial posters. Several famous artists working in Paris, such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Eugène Grasset, TA Steinlen and Alphonse Mucha painted designs specifically for posters.
However, it was their ancestor Jules Chéret (1836–1933), who was the true pioneer of French poster design. Chéret, with his own typography, was able to use this technique with great effectiveness and an unparalleled artistic streak.
His compositions were often dominated by large central figures and prominent hand lettering, printed in bright colours, embellished with semi-transparent washes and stippling effects.
They were artistically of the highest quality and the printing exceptional. Although conceived for commercial use around the turn of the 20th century, poster making was a true art form and an extraordinary collection of prints was created. Nowadays, the original posters from that era are highly valuable collector's items.
This set reproduces some of the posters that made the history of this artistic technique.
