A comprehensive retrospective of the Case Study Houses program
The Case Study House program (1945–1966) was a remarkable and groundbreaking event in the history of American architecture and remains unique to this day. The program, which focused on the Los Angeles area and oversaw the design of 36 prototype houses, sought to provide designs for modern residences that could be built easily and affordably during the postwar building boom.
The program's main driving force was Arts & Architecture editor John Entenza, a champion of modernism who had the connections to attract some of architecture's greatest talents, such as Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames, and Eero Saarinen. Highly experimental, the program generated houses designed to redefine the modern home and has had a profound influence on American and international architecture, both during the program's existence and to this day.
TASCHEN offers you a retrospective of the entire program with comprehensive documentation, splendid period photographs and, for the still-extant houses, contemporary photos, as well as detailed plans and sketches.
The photographer
Images of Californian architecture taken by the American photographer Julius Shulman have burned themselves into the retina of the 20th century, to the point that a book on modernist architecture without Shulman's presence is inconceivable. Some of his photographs, such as the iconic snapshots of the extraordinary structures of Frank Lloyd Wright or Pierre Koenig, have been published countless times. Moreover, it was Shulman's shots that first highlighted the brilliance of the buildings of Charles Eames or his dear friend Richard Neutra. The clarity of his work demanded that architectural photography be considered an independent art form. Each of Shulman's shots fuses his perception and knowledge of the buildings and their place in the landscape, while his careful composition reveals not only the architectural ideas hidden behind the buildings' facades but also the intuitions and hopes of an entire era. Even without human figures, a sense of humanity is always felt in his work. Today, many of the buildings Shulman documented have been lost or crudely converted, but interest in his pioneering images is as alive as ever.
