Blackwing Limited Edition Volume 93 - set of 12

Like every Blackwing Limited Edition, vol.93 is also dedicated to a highly inspired American character: Corita Kent.
Corita was an educator, artist, teacher, and former nun who strongly believed that art could be a tool for dialogue, reflection, and social change.

While chair of the Art Department at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, Corita had a habit of asking her students to engage in exercises in slowness . For example, using a sort of paper "viewfinder" that simulated the camera experience, students could isolate and examine details of the world around them calmly, thus reproducing them in accurate drawings, learning to observe the world with a different perspective .

Curiosity was the driving force of Corita's life and work. From the 1950s until his death in 1986 his art transitioned from modernist interpretations of traditional religious themes to pop culture-infused political statements.

Blackwing vol.93 is a tribute to this artist and her way of dwelling on things: in fact, stopping, slowing down, focusing and finding meaning in every moment of one's daily life, then trying to give back to the bite that surrounds and welcomes us. Each pencil features one of the six brushstrokes that make up Corita's iconic rainbow, commissioned in 1971 and which today adorns a gasometer along Interstate 93 in Dorchester, Massachusetts (which at the time became the largest work of art protected by copyright in the world).

A portion of the proceeds from the purchase of this pencil will be donated to support art education through the Corita Art Center .
