Blackwing Limited Edition Volume 7

The Blackwing Vol. 7 pencil is a tribute to animation, the much-loved cartoons, which always start from a drawing, and which have revolutionized the way we tell and see stories.

Animation works as an optical illusion using a series of images shown in rapid succession that tricks our brain into seeing a continuous film. The human eye can only process up to 12 individual frames per second. Early analog animation devices explored several ways to create this illusion.

The Blackwing Vol. 7 takes inspiration from this analog evolution in storytelling and uses an animation trick called Picket-Fence or Barrier-Grid popularized in the 19th and 20th centuries. This type of animation is created by taking illustrated frames and turning them into a woven pattern that looks like a series of lines when viewed with the naked eye, but transforms into an animated drawing when viewed with a striped overlay.

Each box contains 12 pencils divided into six different designs, which if aligned and looked at through the special viewfinder - included in the package - combine to offer the vision of an animation of Chuck Jones' iconic Wile E. Coyote.
