Bauhaus

In a period of just fourteen years, squeezed between two world wars, the German art and design school Bauhaus changed the face of modernity. Driven by utopian ideals for the future, the school developed a revolutionary fusion of fine art, craftsmanship and technology to be applied in the fields of painting, sculpture, design, architecture, cinema, photography, textiles, ceramics, theatre and installations.

A passionate private community as well as a public-oriented collective, the Bauhaus was initially founded by Walter Gropius (1883–1969) and counted among its members artists of the caliber of Josef and Anni Albers , Wassily Kandinsky , Paul Klee , Oskar Schlemmer , Gunta Stölzl , Marianne Brandt And Ludwig Mies van der Rohe . In the three consecutive locations of Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, the school encouraged a creative and charismatic exchange between teachers and students, who, despite having different artistic preferences and styles, were united by idealism and an interest in a “total” work of art in a wide variety of different practices and media.

This volume celebrates the bold innovation brought about by the Bauhaus movement, pioneer in the development of modernism as well as paradigm of artistic training , whose absolute freedom of creative expression and whose revolutionary ideas have produced beautiful and functional creations.
